Starting Your Google Portfolio Site
Even if you don’t have a website, you probably already have an online presence – through Facebook, Twitter, etc. As a learner in the 21st century – it is important for you to know how to create your own website. We’ll be working on this project – your portfolio – throughout the semester. Today, we’ll build the structure of your site, create an introduction page, write your autobiography page, and link to a blog postings page. You’ll be using your website throughout the semester to store, display, and reflect upon course projects and readings.
The tool for this project is Google Sites. This tool works like a combination website, blog, and wiki all rolled into one, and we’ll be using it for all three functions. You’re going to be really amazed at what you can create without knowing anything about HTML code!

Our tasks for today:
- Create a home page
- Insert an image
- Write a few sentences or list about what you hope to learn this semester
- Create an “About Me” page
- Insert 2-3 pictures
- Include 2-3 links to relevant websites
- Write 2-3 paragraphs about yourself
- Create a Blog Postings page and link to your home page. (Note – we will be converting these posts to WordPress or Blogger in a few weeks in order to use the commenting feature. For some reason Google Sites does not allow others to comment on your blog postings. I still want to show you blogging in case they update Google Sites to allow this functionality in the future.)
We’re just getting comfortable with the tool – so we’ll mess up a few times – but in a few weeks we won’t remember what is was like to not be able to create web pages.
1. Continue working on your Home and About Me pages. We will share these on Monday. (If you need a reminder, watch the YouTube video demonstrating what we did in class today.) If you come to class Monday with your site incomplete, no worries. I still want you to try and complete as much as you can on your own so that you can receive focused help on Monday.
2. Create an electronic document responding to one of the following questions by Wednesday. You can also choose to respond to the reading with your own wonderings or questions. These questions are just a guide. In addition, you will find other relevant questions on pages 17-18 in the reading. This does not need to be a long response – a “reflective” and “engaging” paragraph is fine. We will be using these responses to post on our site, so do not worry about sending me your electronic copy. Plan to have access to this document for Wednesday’s class, so you can copy and paste into your site. If you want to work ahead, you can try posting this on your Google Site “Blog Postings” page. Otherwise, I’ll walk you through the steps in class on Wednesday.
- What is your theory of learning? From your perspective, how do people learn? What are the important processes?
- Which of the skills described in this chapter are most important to you as an educator? Which are most important to comprehending and being able to apply ideas in your discipline?
3. If this is your first day of class, be sure to view the blog post from Monday and Wednesday and complete the student information sheet (link in Monday’s blog posting) and learning story by next Monday.
